This famous work was painted while Van Gogh was a patient at the asylum at Saint-Remy near Arles.  This painting is remarkable for its intense, swirling energy and seems a forceful expression of Van Gogh's own inner turmoil, as if it had erupted onto the canvas in a great burst of spontaneous creativity.
