This picture was painted in March 1888, shortly after Vincent moved to Arles.  He wrote of the vibrant colours of the Provencal landscape '....like a Japanese dream...'.  His many letters tell of the challenges of painting the landscape, the sea and the sky,'.....brushstrokes sometimes come thick and fast like wordsin a conversation or letter....'
