THE BEDROOM AT ARLES, 1888

Vincent Bedrrom in the Yellow House was very important to him- he painted it three times.  The above is the original.  He made it while he was waiting for his friend to arrive.  Vincent regarded it as one of his best pictures, describing it in a letter to his brother, Theo, 'In a word, to look at the picture ought to rest the brain or rather the imagination'.  The picture has become one of the most famous icons in art, its graphic simplicity underlining the humble way of life it depicts.  In many ways this picture epitomises the notion of the romantic artist who cares for nothing except his art.
